Abstract

|
Objective : Previous studies have shown that acupuncture suppresses anxiety-like behavior and ethanol self-administration following chronic ethanol exposure. The present manuscript explores studies directed at elucidating the neural circuit and brain regions for acupuncture control of anxiety-like behavior associated with ethanol dependence.
Methods : This review summarized the possible neural circuit related to the application of acupuncture for anxiety-like behavior in ethanol dependence by searching research and review articles through the keywords ¡®acupuncture, ethanol dependence, anxiety, infralimbic cortex, central amygdala¡¯ on Pubmed, google scholar and RISS sites.
Results and conclusion : Neuropharmacological studies of ethanol dependence suggest important roles for GABA, endorphin, and glutamate in acupuncture-mediated inhibition of anxiety-like behavior. Studies of ethanol dependence have implicated neural circuit including prefrontal cortex and central amygdala in acupuncture effects on anxiety-like behavior in dependent animals.
